181 Atlas of Dates Varieties in Gulf DATES VARIETIES IN G.C.C. Biography Born in Kuwait Al-Qibla district in 1945 He studied at Kuwait in Ahmadiyah, Mubarakiya and Qipla Schools. He earned His high school from Shuwaikh secondary school in 1965, Bachelor of Science from the U.S. University of Colorado In 1969 in Nuclear Physics, Higher Diploma of the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom in 1972 in the Radiation Protection Ph.D. from the United States in 1982 California, in quality control and radiation protection, he attended many training courses, whether in Kuwait or other countries. Work in the Ministry of Health (1969 to 2000). Founder of radiation protection and it was his idea in Kuwait and the proposal of Decree on the organizing the work in radiation, and got Promoted at work from the specialist physicist superintendent of the radiation, to the head of radiation protection. Radiation protection & adviser to the Ministry of Health for the Radiation Protection, Determinant of the Committee for the Prevention of radiation, as well as the advisory for the prevention of radiation since 1973 to 1982. - Adviser to the chairman of board of the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources 1993 to 1998. - Chairman of the First Palm Agricultural Services company 1995 to 2003. - Published more than 60 research in radiation protection, quality control and health physics, medical and environmental protection. Major commercial Varieties of Dates grown in different regions Dates are grown in different parts of the world and each region is known for the production of particular types of dates varying from country to country. The variety of dates known and available commercially may not be of the highest and best quality. The superior quality ones are produced in a smaller and limited quantity, hence not very well known commercially. Iraq The famous types of dates commercially available in Iraq are: Hillawi, khadraoui, Samran and Zahdi. The other types, not very well known commercially, are produced in small quantities are: Al dairi, Buraim, Gibgab, khastawi, aleshrasi and maktoum. Each area in Iraq is famous for its specific type of dates. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is divided into zones: It is divided into different zones as follow: - Eastern region famous in: Khalas, Gurh, khnaizi, Alrziz, Shabibi and Shaishi. - Western region famous in: Anbara, Shalabi, Helwa and Agwa. - Central region famous in: Nabot saif, alkhadari, almaktomi and alsifri. Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco: Diklah Noor, Diklah batha, ftymi, Majhool, Kenta and Ajwa. VIII

The following are varieties of dates found in different parts of the world: 1- Date fruit varieties in Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and UAE, nearly 200 varieties. 2- Date fruit varieties names in Iraq, Al-Ehsaa, Qatif, Al-Qaseem, Hijaz, Bahrain, Oman and Ras Al-Khaimah, in addition to Hadramawt, Tihama, Yemen, Iran, Pakistan, Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco and the United States of America. Also, listed are the names and telephone numbers of companies in the Agricultural industry and related to the agriculture industry in some mannes such as, fertilizer, chemicals, green houses, pesticides, seeds, well drilling, Manufacture of cardboard and plastic, pumps and other associated activities. I have compiled the above mentioned list so that the readers have information readily available in order to contact the respective companies of interest to them. I hope that this literature proves to be a good documented reference with colored pictures of the varieties of dates grown in the Gulf Region. One of Allah’s grace is the creation of various types of dates which are considered and consumed as food, fruit and medicine. Scientists and research has proved the dates to be of high nutritional value. They contains sugar, water, vitamins, mineral, fiber, vinegar and are also used as medicine. All this and more in the fruit of a date palm tree (Phoenix dactylifera), Allah Almighty said in the Holy Book Qur’an «And tall date-palms, with ranged clusters ،A provision for (Allah’s) slaves». Aisha, the wife of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), may Allah be pleased with her, narrated that the prophet (PBUH) said: «Those are hungry people whose households lack the presence of dates». It is amazing, after Allah and his prophet (PBUH) words regarding the blessed Date Palm Tree, that it is being cultivated in far countries of the world. Allah created a variety of date fruit, each having its unique color, shape and taste. you can find different varieties of dates in different parts of the world, the taste varying from Country to country. These are about over three thousand varieties of dates found around the globe, Allah Says in Quran: «And in the earth are neighboring tracts, and gardens of vines, and green crops (fields), and date-palms, growing out two or three from a single stem root, or otherwise (one stem root for every palm ), watered with the same water; yet some of them We make more excellent than others to eat. Verily, in these things there are Ayât (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs) for the people who understand». By the Grace of Allah Almighty, this issue was compiled and completed, which outlines the most varieties of dates grown and found in the Gulf region i.e., Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, UAE and the Sultanate of Oman. it also includes a few categories of male date palms called “Fohoul” in the arabic language. The date palm tree acquires a special place in all religions, especially in most Muslim countries. Abu Hatem sahl Ibn Mohammed Sajistani (776- 866), quoted in his book “Palm Book” that the date palm tree is the master of trees. It is also mentioned in the Holy Quran that: “See you not how Allah sets forth a parable? A goodly word as a goodly tree, whose root is firmly fixed, and its branches (reach) to the sky (i.e. very high) [24]“ The American Scientist Mr. Roy W. Nelson (1895-1976) Called it the tree of life, where as, Mr. Ahmed Shawki the prince of Poets, described dates as the food of the poor and sweets of the rich, and the best victuals for travelers. Another poet Mr. Ilyia Abu Madi said, it is the Adam of trees. Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) said, a true believer is an example of a date palm tree. A true believer never leads you astray and you only benefit from him, similarly, the date palm tree in its totality is very useful and beneficial to us” . I herby pledge and request one and all to learn and also educate them on the benefits of this tree and it’s fruits and to promote cultivation and breed of the date palm on a large scale.
